You are the sky, not the clouds.
I spent a long time believing that a good day meant a calm mind.
So I got to work on the weather. Breathing exercises when the anxiety came. Reframing when the anger came. A gratitude list when the grief came. All of it useful, none of it wasted — and underneath all of it, one quiet assumption I never thought to question: that the storm was the problem, and my job was to make it stop.
Then came a season where it wouldn’t stop. The techniques still worked, briefly, the way an umbrella works. But the weather kept coming, and I started to feel like I was failing at something I’d been told should be getting easier by now.
What finally helped wasn’t a better technique for changing the weather. It was noticing there was a sky.
Sit with this for a second, because it sounds like a metaphor and it isn’t only one. Right now, some thought is moving through you. Some feeling. Some low hum of whatever today has been.
Now — what is noticing it?
Not the thought. The thing the thought is happening in. That awareness doesn’t get anxious when the anxiety arrives. It doesn’t get angry when the anger does. It has been there through every mood you have ever had, completely unbothered, the way the sky is unbothered by weather.
The practice itself
This isn’t about pushing feelings away — that’s just weather management with better branding. It’s about widening the frame until the feeling has room to exist without running the show.
☁️ Try it now — three minutes
- Name the weather. Whatever is here, say it plainly and without editing. Tightness. Restlessness. That flat grey feeling. No fixing yet. Just naming.
- Find where it lives. Chest, jaw, gut, throat. Let your attention rest there for three slow breaths without trying to change it.
- Ask: what is aware of this? Don’t answer with words. Just turn toward the noticing itself, the way you’d turn to look at something behind you.
- Rest there for a breath or two. Not in the feeling. In the space the feeling is happening in.
- Let the weather stay. This is the part people skip. You’re not evicting it. You’re just no longer standing directly underneath it.

Where Source comes in
We talk about Original Source on this path — the unconditioned awareness you already are, underneath every story and wound. This is the most direct doorway to it I know, and it costs nothing.
Because notice: you didn’t have to build that sky. You didn’t earn it with ten years of practice or the right morning routine. It was already there, holding every storm you’ve ever had, waiting for you to look up.
That’s the whole teaching, and it’s why this path is a remembering rather than an achievement. You were never broken. You were only weathered over.
This week’s invitation: when a hard feeling arrives, don’t reach for the tool first. Reach for the sky first. Then use the tool if you still want it.

A gentle note: this practice widens your relationship to difficult feelings, but it isn’t a substitute for care. If what’s moving through you is persistent, overwhelming, or frightening, please reach out to a qualified professional. This practice supports and nourishes — it doesn’t replace medical or psychological support.
